"...Inventive Businesses Praised"

Gumption Online Services competition finalist

Progress2Capital is a competition put on by the Regina Regional Economic Development Authority (RREDA), which has entrepreneurs, inventors and people with ideas to enter the 2007 event.

The top 11 finalists are eligible for prizes and awards. The top two prizes are cash, while other prizes include legal and financial consulting and exposure to the market.

"We tried to make it as close to the real-world experience as we could," said Larry Hiles, CEO of RREDA.

Contestants run a gauntlet of tasks rated by a panel of experts.

The first round is a five-minute proposal to impress judges. Second is a series of tests to refine the business model. Third is a 30-minute presentation to convince judges your business strategy will work.

Hiles said the competition is more than just prize money. It helps refine ideas and provide networking.

The competition was conceived when Hiles realized people had good ideas but couldn't get them off the ground. "You can have a really good invention but you need a solid plan to make the company a success," said Hiles.

This year's national convention, "Tides of Change 2006", hosted by PPOC Atlantic, encompassed Print Show Judging, a trade show, social events for networking, a gala awards banquet and some pretty awesome speakers.

Trevor Owen, CPA and Audrey Price, MAS, represented PixelshapersTM at this year's event. As part of its continuing program of Honours and Awards, the Professional Photographers of Canada President, Brent Edwardson, MPA, presented Trevor with his Craftsman of Photographic Arts Award at the Gala.

Creativity, passion, excellence in photography and good business practices were all part of the incredibly valuable speaker's package at the convention. John Beesley of New Brunswick inspired us with his passion of fine art black and white portraits. Internationally renowned photographer and Past President of Professional Photographers of America, Helen Yancy, lead us to unleash our creativity.

Fuzzy and Shirley Duenkel brought both marketing advice and expertise in the area of Senior Portraits. Fuzzy has been the Senior Photographer's International "Photographer of the Year" 4 times and in 2003 was chosen Wisconsin's Photographer of the Year and received the PPA Imaging Excellence Award.

Katheryn Gordon shared her passion for music and photography in an evening concert incorporating her music and her images and Nova Scotia born Sherman Hines, publisher of over 70 photographic books featuring his photographic images, brought advice on what, how and when to shoot. Kevin Kubota, pioneer of the original "Digital Photography Bootcamp", shared the dynamics of Digital imaging.

Francis Litman taught us to profit from our passion for photography and Marcus Bell taught us to Shoot from the Heart to capture realtionships and not just images. Creating your own style was the theme of Judy Hosts' presentation. Judy speicalizes in photographing children.

Bambi Cantrell's 20 years of industry techniques that have kept her at the top of the wedding industry we shared with us in a high energy, fast paced program.

Kristian Bogner inspired us to strive for ultimate perfection in mind, soul and images. Martin Flewwelling showed us how to bridge the gap between the business of photography and the joy and love of image capture.

Mark Till wrapped up the convention with advice and inspiration on operating our photography business both with passion amd with profitably.

Congratualtions to everyone at PPOC Atlantic on a great job well done!
